As a pilot, you know that cockpit space is at a premium. A tablet PC as the hardware component of your electronic flight bag allows you to conserve precious space and give you a device to view documents and flight data. With plenty of hard drive space and all the capability of a high end laptop, a tablet PC can run any Windows based flight software.
Our Electronic Flight Bag is a Motion LS800 or Motion LE1700 tablet PC on which many of our customers install Jeppesen flight software. The Motion Electronic Flight Bag is considered a Class 1 or Class 2 EFB under FAA regulations. Because the Motion tablet PCs run the Windows XP Professional operating system, they can easily run both JeppView and JeppView FliteDeck, Jeppesen’s electronic charting services.
At Allegiance Technology, we work with Jeppesen to provide the hardware portion of your electronic flight bag. The Motion LE1700, with a 12.1” View Anywhere screen, and the Motion LS800, with an 8.4” View Anywhere screen, are the best way to view your charts in the cockpit. The Motion LS800 weighs just 2.2 pounds and is the choice for the majority of our pilot customers. We have a specially designed kneeboard for it and an Extended Battery that doubles the run time of the tablet. The Motion LE1700, with its bigger screen, is easier to read and only weighs 3.1 pounds but isn't well suited for pilots who are in a constrained cockpit.

Safety is the paramount concern for the aviation industry. For pilots, reliable and constant situational awareness has been a key issue in ensuring safety at the highest levels. Before the recent release of computer based navigation systems that can provide situation information in three dimensions, pilots relied on scanning their gauges and monitoring electronic flight information systems that only provide data in two dimensions. With the rise in availability of 3D navigation systems, pilots will increasingly rely on these applications to visualize terrain scenes, regardless of lighting and weather conditions.
The Tablet PC is ideally suited for these applications because of the powerful, Windows-based operating system and the availability of systems with sufficient processing power, memory and hard drive space. Currently, the most popular tablet hardware platform for such applications as Jeppesen, WeatherWx, VistaNav and others is the Motion L-series. Both the LE1700 and LS800 can be equipped with an outdoor viewable screen that allows pilots to clearly see the data in even the brightest lighting conditions. Another benefit of these systems, which often goes unnoticed among non-pilots, is the ability to reduce the brightness of the screen during night flights. The Motion Dashboard is easily opened with the push of a button and allows the pilot to adjust the brightness of the screen based on the existing lighting.
The Motion units have become so popular among pilots that a number of companies are manufacturing yoke mounts and kneeboards specifically designed to accommodate the LS800 tablet PC. They can be powered off a standard 12V or 24V adapter or, with the Extended Battery offered with either unit, you can double the run time of the standard battery. For pilots who don’t want a permanent or yoke mount, there are kneeboard cases available that fit the form factor of the LS800.
For flight planning, moving maps (when used with a GPS), viewing digitized charts and more, a tablet PC combined with your choice of EFB software provides a practical and affordable paperless cockpit solution.
